Desiree’s Story

Desiree and her 2 children had been experiencing daily physical, emotional, and verbal abuse perpetrated by the children’s biological father. Desiree took that first step and found the courage to leave the relationship and took the kids to stay with a family member.

Desiree knew she needed help for herself and for her children. She came to FCR’s Mental Health Clinic. Clinicians worked individually with Desiree, Ana, and Jonathan to process the past abuse and helped them learn to develop coping skills, relaxation, and calming strategies to manage difficult feelings and memories related to the past abuse. They learned the abuse was not their fault and started to rebuild their sense of safety and emotional well-being.

Desiree’s clinician referred her to the FCR Domestic Violence Advocacy Program where Desiree was able to engage in psychoeducation to learn about patterns of abuse and qualities of healthy relationships. Her advocate supported her in navigating systems like court and the Department of Children and Families. Desiree was referred to FCR’s Housing Program; working with her housing advocate, Desiree was able to obtain safe, affordable housing for herself and her children.
